VX-5 has 20 aviation officers, 8 other officers, 177 enlisted and 14 aircraft consisting of 1 A-1E, 6 A-4C, 4 A-4E, 1 TC-45J, 1 F-4B & 1 O-1D. GCA-57 has 3 officers & 21 enlisted.
• Mar. 31 -- U.S. Air Force Major Thomas R. Brock (pilot) and passengers Hobart C. Hale, Edward L. Taylor & Clarence E. Yates (all VX-5 enlisted) lost their lives when the UC-45J Bugsmasher (29581) crashed in a storm 7 miles southwest of Mt. Whitney.
• May 16 -- U.S. Navy AE-3 Donald R. Baker lost his life in a skydiving demonstration for Armed Forces Day.
• July 1 -- NAF has 36 aviation officers (1 SCI), 6 other officers, 654 enlisted (31 SCI) and 53 aircraft consisting of 2 A-1G, 1 NA-4B, 1 NA-4C, 6 A-4B, 4 A-4C, 2 A-4E, 3 TF-10B, 1 NF-8D, 2 F-8E, 1 F-8D, 4 DF-8F, 1 F-4B, 2 DT-28B, 1 SP-2E, 1 S-2A, 2 C-117D, 1 C-131F, 1 TC-45J, 1 UH-34G, 1 UH-34J & 15 QG-9G. VX-5 has 20 aviation officers, 6 other officers, 164 enlisted and 15 aircraft consisting of 1 A-1E, 7 A-4C, 5 A-4E, 1 TC-45J & 1 F-4B. GCA-57 has 1 aviation officer, 2 other officers & 17 enlisted. The Flying Club has 1 T-34B.
• September -- Highly successful firings of Redeye, the worlds smallest guided missile system, were scored. The audience included U.S. congressional representatives, high ranking military officials, representatives of nine NATO nations and U.S. allies and scores of newsmen.
